The Globe and Mail's second annual national liveability ranking placed Newmarket, Ontario at #48 out of 488 communities across Canada and within the top 10 communities in Ontario.

What the Ranking Actually Measured

This wasn't simply a popularity survey.

The national ranking compared communities using ten broad categories. That matters because liveability isn't one thing. A beautiful park alone cannot create it. Neither can a strong economy, a festival calendar or one desirable neighbourhood in isolation.

Ten different lenses create a much more complete picture. That is why this particular recognition interests me: it looks beyond a single attraction and considers many of the factors that shape everyday life.

Newmarket had ranked #83 the year before.

Moving from #83 into Canada's top 50 caught my attention because it suggests that this isn't simply a community relying on an established reputation. The ranking moved significantly in one cycle.
