Plenty of towns treat winter as something to survive between festival seasons. Newmarket built an entire event around it.

Ice Lounge on Main takes over Historic Main Street for a February weekend and turns one of Newmarket's most recognizable streets into an outdoor winter gathering place.

The result is simple but powerful: instead of waiting for warmer weather to bring people downtown, the community creates a reason to bundle up, meet friends, explore local businesses and enjoy Main Street in the middle of winter.

What the Weekend Looks Like

For the 2026 edition, the event ran from noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Main Street became a pedestrian-focused winter event zone stretching through the historic downtown core.

The same Choose Local spirit that supports downtown businesses during other Main Street events shows up here too.

During the 2026 event, visitors who spent $50 or more on eligible products or services at participating downtown businesses could bring their receipts to the Choose Local booth at Timothy Street and Main Street for a chance to win one of six grand prizes valued at $500 or more.

The festival brings people downtown. The Choose Local program gives them another reason to step through the doors of the businesses that keep Main Street active all year.

Ice Lounge on Main is a deliberate counter-move. It creates a reason for residents and visitors to come downtown during a traditionally slower period and places local restaurants, shops and services directly inside the experience.

That idea has already shown results. According to the Town of Newmarket, the inaugural 2024 Ice Lounge on Main brought thousands of visitors downtown and helped many local establishments experience sales levels near their summertime highs during a typically slower period.
