BIG QUESTION
What will your week actually look like?
RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE · YORK REGION
Why Active Retirement Matters When You Are Choosing Where to Live
A big question behind downsizing is rarely just square footage. It is whether daily life will still feel interesting, connected and full.
For years, decisions about home may have revolved around bedrooms, school districts, commuting, yard space and having enough room for everyone around the dining table.
Then life changes. Children grow up. Work may slow down or stop. The house that once felt perfectly suited to your lifestyle may suddenly feel larger than you need.
And a completely different question becomes important:
“What do I actually want my days to look like now?”
That is why anyone considering downsizing in Newmarket or moving within York Region should look beyond the home itself.
Look at the life surrounding it. A beautiful bungalow or condominium may check every box on paper, but if the activities, people and places you love are difficult to reach, that matters too.
IMAGINE YOUR WEEK
What would you genuinely enjoy doing every week?
Walking groups, fitness, swimming or aquafit
Cards, bridge, euchre or social activities
Art, educational programs or workshops
Volunteering, coffee with friends or community events

Newmarket's RecPass Is Worth Understanding Too
You may decide that you do not necessarily want every activity in your week to be specifically designed for seniors.
Newmarket's recreation system includes broader fitness and recreation opportunities, and its RecPass program can provide access to participating municipal facilities and scheduled activities.

55+ Programs in Aurora: Another Strong Option
Aurora has its own active older-adult community centred around the Aurora Seniors' Centre on John West Way.
The Centre welcomes adults aged 55 and older and provides a variety of programs, activities, events and outings throughout the year.
Depending on the season, residents may find registered activities as well as additional recreational and social opportunities.

Explore Aurora seniors services
Aurora maintains current information about programs, services and opportunities available to older adults.
Explore Aurora seniors services →Aurora also offers programs that can help residents remain active during the colder months, when outdoor routines become less predictable.
That may sound like a small detail until you think about February in York Region. A beautiful trail matters, but so does having somewhere warm, accessible and welcoming to remain active when the weather changes.
RETIREMENT PLANNING · LIFESTYLE FIRST
Don't Choose the Program First. Choose the Life First.
I would not begin by asking which town has more programs.
That number by itself does not tell you very much.
Instead, write down two or three things you would genuinely like to do every week.
Not things you think you should do. Things you would actually enjoy.
Maybe that is walking. Maybe it is fitness. Maybe you would rather play cards for three hours than spend thirty minutes in a gym. Perhaps you want to paint, volunteer, attend events or simply have a regular place where people know your name.
BEFORE YOU MOVE
Three Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Program — or a Neighbourhood
QUESTION ONE
Would I Really Make This Trip Every Week?
A seven-minute drive and a twenty-five-minute drive may both look reasonable on a map. They can feel very different when you are making that trip several times each week. Ask yourself whether you would still make the journey on a dark, cold February afternoon.
QUESTION TWO
What Does the Calendar Look Like Throughout the Year?
Do not evaluate a community based on one month's activity calendar. Look at fall, winter, spring and summer. Ask what continues year-round and what is seasonal. A retirement lifestyle should not work beautifully only during July.
QUESTION THREE
What Happens If My Interests Change?
Perhaps today you love tennis or golf. Ten years from now, you may prefer swimming, art classes, walking groups, lectures or organized outings. The broader the activities around you, the more flexibility your community can offer as life changes.
“A community that gives you many different ways to spend a morning tends to age well with you.”
ACTIVE LIVING · BEYOND THE RECREATION CENTRE
Think Beyond Formal 55+ Programs
Municipal programming is a great starting point, but it should not be the entire conversation.
When I think about active retirement in Newmarket and Aurora, I also think about parks, walking trails, libraries, coffee shops, restaurants, theatre, arts, church communities, volunteer opportunities, farmers' markets, fitness facilities, golf, pickleball, shopping and healthcare.
And most importantly, proximity to the people you love.
Retirement lifestyle is often created through small things: a friend you can meet for coffee easily, a trail five minutes away, a favourite class, a community event, or being close enough to grandchildren that dropping by does not become an expedition.

Which Is Better for Retirement?
I do not think there is one universal answer.
Both communities can support an active retirement lifestyle.
The better question is:
“Which community fits the way I actually want to live?”
Someone who has spent decades in Newmarket may value remaining close to lifelong friendships, Main Street, familiar healthcare providers, Southlake, church, family and established routines.
Another homeowner may prefer Aurora because of family location, recreation, trails, cultural amenities or a particular housing option.
Sometimes people discover that they do not need to leave their community at all. They simply need a different home within it.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Try the Lifestyle Before You Decide
If you are seriously thinking about moving to a different neighbourhood or community, try living part of your future routine before you buy there.
Visit the recreation centre. Walk nearby trails. Have coffee in the neighbourhood. Drive from the property to the places you expect to use regularly.
Try one of the programs. Attend an event. Take a friend along if trying something new by yourself feels uncomfortable.
You are not simply evaluating amenities. You are testing whether you can picture yourself belonging there.
THE RIGHT MOVE MAY BE NO MOVE
Sometimes Staying Put Is the Right Decision
Not every retirement conversation needs to end with selling the house.
Sometimes a homeowner looks at the finances, family, lifestyle and available housing options and realizes:
“I actually like my life right here.”
Perhaps the better choice is updating a bathroom, simplifying the landscaping, modifying the main floor, hiring help with maintenance or becoming more involved in programs that already exist nearby.
Downsizing should solve something. If moving does not clearly improve your lifestyle, finances, accessibility or sense of freedom, there may be no reason to rush.
