Why People Love Hillary House in Aurora

There are buildings that help explain the character of a community. Hillary House is one of them.

Built in 1861–1862, Hillary House National Historic Site is recognized for the remarkable completeness of its Gothic Revival architecture and its landscaped setting along Yonge Street in Aurora.

The steep centre gable, decorative bargeboard, wraparound verandah, pointed arches, prominent chimneys and contrasting brickwork create the picturesque Victorian character that makes the house so distinctive.

But the story is not only architectural. Hillary House was also a family home and medical practice for generations of physicians, which is why the property today incorporates the Koffler Museum of Medicine.

HILLARY HOUSE · AURORA HISTORY

More Than 160 Years of Aurora History

Hillary House was built in 1861–1862 for Dr. Walter Bayne Geikie and his family. Dr. Geikie practised medicine from the front rooms of the house, establishing a connection between the property and medical practice that would continue through later owners.

Four physicians are associated with the house: Dr. Walter Geikie, Dr. Frederick Strange, Dr. Robert William Hillary and Dr. Robert Michael Hillary. The Hillary family made the property their home for several generations.

Hillary House was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1973, recognizing its significance as one of Ontario's best and most complete examples of Gothic Revival architecture.

The Aurora Historical Society later acquired the property to preserve the house, grounds and collection for future generations.

“Places like Hillary House remind us that a community is shaped not only by what is being built next, but by what previous generations chose to preserve.”

What Heritage Means When Buying a Home in Aurora

A beautiful old home and a designated heritage property are not necessarily the same thing.

If you're considering a home in one of Aurora's established neighbourhoods, find out the property's specific heritage status before assuming what can or cannot be changed.

The Town of Aurora maintains a Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest and processes heritage designations and heritage permit applications.

Heritage requirements are property-specific. Before making renovation, addition or redevelopment plans, confirm the property's status and applicable requirements directly with the Town's Heritage Planning staff.

GRACE'S LOCAL PERSPECTIVE

Understand the History Before You Fall for the Staircase

“A home with genuine history can be a beautiful thing to live in. The key is understanding both the character you're buying and the responsibilities that may come with preserving it.”

When I work with buyers considering an older Aurora home, I encourage them to ask the heritage questions early. Enjoy the original trim, the staircase, the mature street and the architecture — but also know the property's status and what that could mean for future plans before making the decision.

LIVING IN AURORA · COMMUNITY CHARACTER

What Hillary House Says About Living in Aurora

Aurora's appeal is not based on one style of neighbourhood. That is part of what makes the community interesting.

Historic streets and nineteenth-century landmarks sit within the same town as established family neighbourhoods, newer communities and substantial estate properties.

For a buyer, that means choosing Aurora is not simply choosing a municipality. It is deciding which version of Aurora best fits the way you want to live.

Whether that means heritage character, an established tree-lined street or an estate home with greater privacy, understanding the neighbourhood around the house is just as important as understanding the house itself.
